The hills are all green, and although there is much deforestation of the old high canopy forest, the understory prevails in the form of vines, banana, palms and many other small trees with epithites. Meghalaya is remote, and sparsly populated in comparison to India as we know it today. The people are of tribal descent. Three Magotr tribes moved into the region a very long time ago, mostly of mixed race, Tibetan Burmese. Meghalaya is made up of three hill regions, the East ,South and West Garo Hills, The West and East Khasi Hills, and the Jaintia Hills. They are also the names of the three major tribes. They do not look like Indians but from the lands of the ancestery. They eat different foods and speak a number of Garo languages as well as indian dialects. Meghalaya means in Garo "the domain of clouds".
